The brutal police murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police has sparked first in the Twin Cities and then across the USA, Europe and the world mass protests against racism. While police brutality directed against people of color is in no way unusual in the US, the global call for systemic change is unprecedented. Despite diverse aims, a common denominator seems to emerge: divest from the police and the prisons. The criminal justice system has become the target and is meanwhile widely understood as fulfilling a key function in upholding an unbearable state of inequality. We have invited social activists from Minneapolis, who are part of the Decarcerate MN coalition, to speak with us about why now and to talk about social organizing and justice, their goals and the future of the current movement.

Der brutale Tod von George Floyd durch einen weißen Polizisten hat zuächst in Minneapolis und dann in den ganzen USA, in Europa und überall auf der Welt Massenproteste gegen Rassismus ausgelöst. Während Polizeibrutalität gegen People of Colour in den USA keineswegs ungewöhnlich ist, ist der weltweite Ruf nach systemischen Veränderungen beispiellos. Trotz unterschiedlicher Ziele scheint sich in den USA ein gemeinsamer Nenner abzuzeichnen: das "divest" von Polizei und Gefängnissen, d.h. das Abziehen von Investitionen in dieses System. Das Strafjustizsystem ist zu einem Hauptgegenstand der Proteste geworden und wird mittlerweile allgemein als eine Schlüsselfunktion bei der Aufrechterhaltung eines unerträglichen Ungleichheitszustands verstanden.
Wir haben Aktivist_innen aus Minneapolis eingeladen, mit uns über die aktuelle Situation zu sprechen, über die Organisierung des Kampfes für Gerechtigkeit und die Ziele und die Zukunft der gegenwärtigen Bewegung.

- Dr. Raj, associate professor, Metropolitan State University, Twin Cities, mit über 20 Jahren Erfahrung in community activism.
- Yolanda Roth, Gewerkschafterin, Community Organizerin und Aktivistin in den Twin Cities Minneapolis und St. Paul.
